Hickory 04:51
If I could do it all again I hope I wouldn’t go I’d tell that handsome dark-haired man “Thank you the answer’s no” Foolish me, I had dreamed I’d Be a soldier’s bride And I blushed when he asked me to Lay down by his side His eyes were bright and shining He was strong like an oak tree He was the very first man I’d known Not a boy from Hickory Oh me oh my oh What will become of me? Oh dear when I die oh Take me back to Hickory He confessed in the dark that night He was absent without leave He’d slipped away at Fredericksburg On a dark and quiet eve He laid his head upon my breast Told me he was afraid Of the fighting, fever, & cold Of how he’d run away He said, “Follow me to Asheville We’ll cross west through Tennessee Ride all the way to Kansas Leave behind your Hickory” Oh me oh my oh What will become of me? Oh dear when I die oh Take me back to Hickory I could have have stopped right there Bid him fare thee well But I was young and I let him Damn us both to hell We didn’t make the mountains, no They stopped us on the road Hanged him for a traitor and left me Far away from home With a baby in my womb And far from my family Today I curse that coward’s name Take me back, Hickory Oh me oh my oh What will become of me? Oh dear when I die oh Take me back to Hickory

Mr. Charles Harned, your life sure looks fine You made a million dollars just chipping away In the Wall Street silver mine Where you buy for a nickel And you sell for a dime Mr. Charles Harned, your wife is trifling and mean It’s no wonder the you’ve been riding the train Heading down to New Orleans With a dance-hall sweetheart Acting like she’s a queen Cause you are a rascal and a cheat and a liar and thief And you ain’t no pal of mine The road to perdition will come to fruition The moment that you die Mr. Charles Harned Mr. Charles Harned, I know that you’ve been ill And the cough has gotten in you and the doctors have exhausted All their tonics and their pills This train will be your coffin Before you reach Danville Cause you are a rascal and a cheat and a liar and thief And you ain’t no pal of mine The road to perdition will come to fruition The moment that you die Mr. Charles Harned Mr. Charles Harned, where are you now? Is it God’s holy angel or an imp of the devil Wiping sweat off of your brow? I think I know Where you landed somehow Cause you are a rascal and a cheat and a liar and thief And you ain’t no pal of mine The road to perdition will come to fruition The moment that you die Mr. Charles Harned

Man in Gray 04:01
Hey there boys, we’re the Carolina infantry It don’t care about you, it don’t care about me Promised a dollar, haven’t see a dime And I should do it for Dixie? Well, ain't that fine Hey there boys, I don’t know if you’ve heard This road we’re on goes to Fredericksburg I’m tired of the cold, and of sleeping in the corn I’d sell my boots to eat something warm Don’t you hear that whip-poor-will call? He’s singing our names as the evening falls And I feel it, deep down in my bones That we’re never going to make it home All the girls want a man in gray I believe that’s what those posters say All the girls want a man in gray Hey there boys, it’s a free state in Kansas We could light out now, take out chances Don’t worry about JEB, Jackson, or Lee They won’t miss us much I guarantee Don’t you hear that whip-poor-will call? He’s singing our names as the evening falls And I feel it, deep down in my bones That we’re never going to make it home All the girls want a man in gray I believe that’s what those posters say All the girls want a man in gray

Glory 04:08
I was a young man, with a belly full of sin I was not ready to let my savior in Left my home in Caroline With the devil right behind Never thought about the glory of the lord In Johnson City, my soul was finally spent I felt the call of a white revival tent When the preacher spoke in tongues I heard what I could become If I gave my glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord You can hear the people shout When I drive the devil out That’s the way I give glory to the lord That’s the way I give glory to the lord The gospel says don’t fear a deadly thing Give yourself over to the king of kings I don’t fear the serpent’s bite Cause I know my faith is right And that’s that the way I give glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord You can hear the people shout When I drive the devil out That’s the way I give glory to the lord That’s the way I give glory to the lord I left the hollers of eastern Tennessee To bring the good news to my kin in Hickory I cured them of their pain With blessed Jesus’s name That’s that the way I give glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord Oh the way I give glory to the lord You can hear the people shout When I drive the devil out That’s the way I give glory to the lord That’s the way I give glory to the lord

Oh baby I’m Knoxville bound And I heard You might be hanging round And I was hoping That you still know how to sin Got on the road At half past two And the whole time I’ve been picturing you Wearing Nothing but a grin I’m driving fast, Going down the road Slow down Pretty baby or I might explode Oh darling The state you put me in I looked for you Until the crack of dawn And I heard How you been carrying on Dancing Til you wore right through the floor Why don’t you Answer your phone? You’re leaving Me all alone And it makes me Want you so much more Now I know where you are I don’t care where you been I’m knocking pretty baby won’t you let me in? Don’t leave me Hanging outside your door I’m leaving Tennessee Without Your company Gonna find me A baby that’s sweet and true I’m passing Through Gatlinburg Your sister’s There the last I heard And I understand That she’s been feeling blue I’ll pop on in Give her the time Take her with me on down the line We’ll be happy Until I think of you

I don’t like those shoes Those heavy black shoes Momma says I gotta wear I don’t think I do I hid them underneath the hickory tree Ran off feeling free But I knew the rule And when I got to school Teacher Mary would be scowling at me Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes? I don’t like those shoes Those heavy black shoes Momma says I gotta wear I don’t think I do Everybody thinks I should be ashamed But I’m staking a claim I don’t think that it’s fair Boys feet can be bare And the girls aren’t treated the same Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes? I don’t like those shoes Those heavy black shoes Momma says I gotta wear I don’t think I do I’ve been walking on the ground all summer long I’m tough and strong If you send me home I’ll walk all alone Singing a traveling song Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes?

I thought you had money, you thought I did too We’d be together and well-to-do But how lucky that we never knew You love me, I’m mad about you I thought you had a fancy house fit for a tsar A brand new shiny motor car A butler and a maid To bring me ice-cold lemonade And I wanted you to marry me I hoped that you’d believe I had money But that wasn’t true I thought you had money, you thought I did too We’d be together and well-to-do But how lucky that we never knew You love me, I’m mad about you You thought I was very debonaire Most certainly a millionaire I’d buy you a diamond ring You’d be queen to my king But I found out after our embrace That you were just a pretty face Without money No revenue Instead of Paris We can go to the matinee Who would have thought that Life could be so gay It doesn’t matter whatever we do I’m happy as long as I’m with you I thought you had money, you thought I did too We’d be together and well-to-do But how lucky that we never knew You love me, I’m mad about you

Bull City 04:17
I hear the whistle in the morning Long before a body can feel the sun Another day for me, working at the ATC Making money for Mr Duke and his sons Six days a week I pull the stem off the leaf Cuts my hands and makes my fingers sore Mr Duke will say, he hardly has to pay All the women who were widowed in the war I’m alright don’t you worry mama I’m getting by the best I can Don’t you cry We’ll be together in the by and by Playing in the angel band I wish I had never come to Durham Bull City never treated me very well It just bound me down, in the Carolina ground Old Mr. Duke you can go to hell I’m alright don’t you worry mama I’m getting by the best I can Don’t you cry We’ll be together in the by and by Playing in the angel band But Daughter Sarah writes from Kansas I hardly know her for the way that she has grown She’ll never waste away in Mr Duke’s factory She has some land and a little one of her own I’m alright don’t you worry mama I’m getting by the best I can Don’t you cry We’ll be together in the by and by Playing in the angel band

In the morning I’ll be gone Long before the dawn I hate myself more than you’ll know But darling sleep tight Until the morning light I won’t wake you up when I go I won’t wake you up when I go I won’t wake you up when I go My god you look sweet Lying there asleep And I won’t wake you up when I go My home in Georgia was green and fair But nothing can compare To New York City in the snow But I couldn’t make it pay Nothing came my way So I’m leaving with my head bowed down low I won’t wake you up when I go I won’t wake you up when I go My god you look sweet Lying there asleep And I won’t wake you up when I go North on Park Avenue The station is in view And the black sky turns indigo I can see the Hudson’s mouth In the dark heading south And on the left will be the sunlight’s first glow I won’t wake you up when I go I won’t wake you up when I go My god you look sweet Lying there asleep And I won’t wake you up when I go

about

This collection of songs is inspired by family stories. My family has roots in the Appalachians and the Piedmont of the southeastern US and that landscape is with me wherever I go. My grandmother’s and great grandmother’s house on Watts Street in Durham, my mother’s memories of growing up outside of Charlotte, my uncle’s cabin near Asheville where he sang old country tunes – are all tied up in my mind with the hardwood forests and mountains of North Carolina.

As for the stories, are they true? Some stick mostly to the facts` and some are tall tales. My mother said that her mother never let truth interfere with art and neither did she. The characters in the stories feel real to me and I think that’s enough.

My mother Betsy is living with Alzheimer’s now, a disease that took her brother Jerry (my beloved uncle), and her mother Aura as well. Family stories comforted them as they faded. These songs are dedicated to them and to the people that cared for them. Proceeds from this record will go to support research into that terrible disease.

Keep telling stories. And remember those who can’t.
