about

My mother grew up in North Carolina in the 1940s and had polio as a child. One morning she caused a scandal when she ditched the corrective, orthopedic shoes she was supposed to wear and went to school barefoot (which was allowed for the boys).

lyrics

I don’t like those shoes
Those heavy black shoes
Momma says I gotta wear
I don’t think I do

I hid them underneath the hickory tree
Ran off feeling free
But I knew the rule
And when I got to school
Teacher Mary would be scowling at me
Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes?

I don’t like those shoes
Those heavy black shoes
Momma says I gotta wear
I don’t think I do

Everybody thinks I should be ashamed
But I’m staking a claim
I don’t think that it’s fair
Boys feet can be bare
And the girls aren’t treated the same
Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes?

I don’t like those shoes
Those heavy black shoes
Momma says I gotta wear
I don’t think I do

I’ve been walking on the ground all summer long
I’m tough and strong
If you send me home
I’ll walk all alone
Singing a traveling song
Oh, Missy, where’s your shoes?
